LOCAL WEATHER SIREN NOTICE
Alma, Buffalo City, Cochrane and Nelson have joined forces with the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center to create a cohesive use of our weather sirens. Our four communities have agreed to assist our dispatch center and set off all our sirens at the same time. The sirens will go off whenever a severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning is issued for our area. Dispatch will be utilizing the LaCrosse Weather System for our warnings. The sirens do have the potential to be sounded twice. If a thunderstorm is upgraded to a tornado warning the siren will sound a second time. On all occasions, the sound will last about one minute.
Please, DO NOT call the sheriff’s department to find out what the siren is for. Their lines need to remain open for emergency calls. The purpose of the sirens is to alert you to check your radio, television, or phone for additional warning information.
In conjunction with this new system all our sirens will be tested once a month from March thru November. All four communities will perform their test on the first Tuesday of the month sometime between 1 and 1:30 p.m. During the test, the siren will be very short. It will be started and stopped as soon as it is heard.
